How To Stop A Dog From Barking
By Navy Tiek
Most people do not want to stop their dogs from barking all of the time. They only want them to stop for the times that it is annoying and disturbing. It is also not a good idea to train your dog never to bark, as you would want him to bark if there were strangers trying to break into your house, for example. The barking that most people want to stop is the excessive barking the barking that dogs do for the pure fun of barking. How to stop a dog from barking can depend on the dog and its personality, there are a few methods to try.
Barking is a natural behavior for dogs. They bark at each other and they bark at what is strange, but sometimes dogs just bark. When not barking at people or animals near their territory, dogs usually bark for one of two reasons. One reason is that they want attention. They might stand in the backdoor and bark at you. The second reason is that the dog is frustrated. Dogs that are confined in a kennel or run may bark to be let out. They might also bark out of boredom in this situation. Annoyed neighbors and children may also make the situation worse by antagonizing them.
First, you will want to determine why the dog barks all the time. There is usually a reason that they are barking and it is not always something that you see. For example, dogs might bark at a trashcan in the yard because it is new to them. They might bark at squirrels on the roof or at hot air balloons in the sky. A lot of these reasons are out of your control. Avoid yelling at the dog, because that just gives them incentive to keep going. They think that you will yell at them again when they bark and it just becomes a game.
Secondly, you will want to begin the process of teaching your dog that he cannot bark for attention. Do not let your dog in if he is barking for it. Wait until the dog is quiet before inviting him in the house. The key is to make your dog associate being quite with getting what he wants.

A third way to train a dog to stop barking is to make barking a bad experience. Most trainers recommend a squirt bottle and you may need to wear it on your hip for a couple of days to give your dog the full effect. Do not say anything to the dog while it is barking. As the dog barks you will want to squirt him with the water and say “quiet” in a firm voice. A dog will not take you seriously if the voice is not firm. You must always use a consistent tone as you say it. When you are done squirting the dog, say nothing else and walk off. When the dog begins barking again, squirt him, say “quiet” in the same manner as before and ignore him. This will go over and over until the dog realizes that “quiet” means that he is going to get squirted. Eventually the dog will decide that this game is not very fun and he will stop barking.
The only exception to any barking is when the dog is barking at something you want him to bark at. Do not punish the dog for these moments, but only when he is being obnoxious.
